Episode Title: What’s Wrong with Your Company Training
What do employees think about their company’s training? Here are the biggest problems they see, next on The Perna Syndicate.
Ep 470 show:
Hello and welcome! This is The Perna Syndicate, and all week we’ve been talking about a new study on learning and development in the workplace. Though most people were overall satisfied with their company’s training options, some were not—and they shared a few specific reasons why.
Fully half of the respondents said the training would be better if it were more relevant. 40% felt their training was outdated, and another 37% said they wanted to have more control over what they were learning.
Another issue was the length of the current training. 28% of workers want their training to be broken into shorter, quicker sessions. Finally, more than a quarter of people wish their training could be more social and group-based rather than done individually. (As an aside, I think we can see a Millennial influence in that last number.)
The big takeaway here is that companies need to be very thoughtful in both what and how they train. The best place to start is with direct employee feedback on what they want their training to deliver, from the type of skills they want to improve to their preferred learning format.
The rise of learning and development is making one thing very clear: your training programs need to do more than just to check off the box. Robust employee training is a new competitive differentiator—and one that organizations can’t afford to take lightly.
That’s all for this week on The Perna Syndicate. Thanks for tuning in and making this a part of your day! I’m your host, Mark Perna, and we’ll see you back here next week for more on The Perna Syndicate. Until then, take care!
