A few weeks ago, I learned that my book Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations had won Silver in the 2019 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards. I was, in a word, stunned.
Yes, I poured my heart and soul into making this book the best it could be. I drew on my extensive experience and insights working the younger generations in the field of education and workforce development. And I partnered with some amazing professionals to finalize every last detail of the published work. But it was still an unexpected and humbling moment when I found out that Answering Why was being recognized at this level.
Then just a few days later, I experienced another stunning moment in my life. I received an email from the folks at the Nautilus Book Awards, informing me that Answering Why had also won Silver in their 2018 competition. Medaling in two prestigious award competitions alongside previous winners like the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra, and Simon Sinek—I never dreamed this was possible. Who knew?!
I’m naturally thrilled with the awards that Answering Why is winning, but I feel keenly that this recognition is not about me. It’s the message that is resonating with readers, at a time when we desperately need to engage young people differently and inspire them to perform at a higher level. I have always wanted to make a bigger difference in education and workforce development. Now, it’s my hope that these awards will further that goal and help spread this message to an even wider audience.
I’ll be attending the IPPY Awards ceremony in New York City on May 28 and I promise to share lots of pictures from that exciting night. Though the event doesn’t allow time for acceptance speeches, my heart will be overflowing with gratitude. Words can’t express my thanks to all those who have had a hand in helping me create Answering Why. My amazing clients, family, friends, and TFS team have all played a role, and this book would not exist without their input and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all!
